1998 Windstar Transmission Overdrive Prob
I've got a 1998 Ford Windstar with a 3.8 liter engine with a repetetive transmission problem.
Back in November, the transmission overheated and blew the front seal. The dealer contacted Ford and got the OK to replace the transmission with a "new" one. Actually it was a rebuilt from Ford. They put it in and not a half hour from the dealer, the overdrive light on the stick started blinking. I took it back, they muddled with it and it stopped. At this point, we were 1000 miles from home. We started the trek back home and when we were almost home, the light started blinking again. We took it to a local dealer here where we live. They had the van for about three weeks. Apparently Ford had them rebuild the transmission. This was at the end of December. Now it is starting again. After about an hour of driving, the light starts blinking again.
When the light is blinking, the trans won't go into overdrive. Shortly before it starts blinking I can watch the transmision slipping through the tach. At 60mph, the tach is ususally about 2000rpm. Just before the light starts blinking I can watch the tach bump up to about 2200 rpm and back down. Eventually it drops out of overdrive altogether and stays at about 3000 rpm.
Since this is a repetetive problem, could something else be causing it? Like the computer?
Thanks,
Bob
