good question EAtdust, im not too good with diffs myself and dont know much about them, do you just change the middle part? or do you open up the whole thing and change the internals? im thinking of getting a second hand l.s.d now, one that will just fit straight into the eb then getting that rebuilt later on... possibility?

I got this info after a quick search on the net!!!
I think all Nissan dealers will be pretty much the same for things like this.
The PN for 3.9 gears is:
3.7 gears were used in R31 Skylines with manual trans, the PN for those gears is:
4.1 gears were used in R31 Pintara's (manual or auto) and the PN is:
To my knowledge, the above are the only make/models that used the BW Model 78 diff with those gear ratios. Holden's and Fords also used the model 78, but they got nothing shorter than 3.45 gears AFAIC.
FYI, the R31 Pintara is basically the same body as the Skyline, but with a 4-cyl engine (CA20), thus the reason for the 4.1 gears. All the above gears are interchangeable between any model 78 diff (as you probably know).
I know that the 3.7 and the 3.9 gears are renowned for the whining problem, but haven't heard much about the 4.1's. In any event, I'd recommend getting hold of a new set if you can.
