its deffinately do able, if you're going to do a transmission conversion then i'd deffinately go the manual, it can be costly but it all comes down to the parts, search the forums for past references to transmission conversions.
i know a lot of people on here have done it :)
don't know how much mechanical expertise you'd need though, or how much it is for a mechanic to do it.
sounds like you've already got plans for the ol' EA :D
