I've got a EA 3 speed auto....I'm toying with the idea of supercharging or turbo'ing it and it runs the 3 speed auto. The boost conversion won't be anything nutso as it is our 2nd family car and does duty as grocery getter among other things. What I want to know is will the 3 speed handle it? Should I peg it and get a 4 speed auto? And no I don't want a manual! Any info appreciated.

The 3 speed is a lot tougher than the 4 speed, doubt you'll have too many problems.

So what......stick with the 3 speed and go for a lower diff ratio?

The EA 3 speed is supposed to be the strongest of the BW 3 speeds. The only thing you might have to do is up the line pressure. This is like shift kitting it. If the torque is too much for it std you will toast the clutches and bands.

The other thing I've noticed too is that when I leave it to shift automatically the shift points are real low in the rev range (hardly past 3000rpm giving it the boot). Is there any way to remedy this?

how tough are the 5 speeds?
i have one in my car
are the T5's suitable if i were to turbo or supercharge the engine?

like are they tough enough?

T5's will only handle 200 odd kw reliable, maybe more if your kind to it. Dont even think about the 4spd, they are just too costly to strengthen

The 3spd is tougher, but i wouldnt think it would like boost too much. Go with a old school C4 auto, kitted with a decent converter. You wont kill it.

Yeah, 15 years ago I had a C4 behind a 302 in a Goss Special XB coupe......couldn't kill it and it did some seriously hard work!
