The 4 spd makes a knocking, grinding noise when taking off from a standing start, lacks power trying to take off, when you put the boot in it slams into 2nd and 3rd. And then some times it goes into limp home mode, in which case i stop and turn the key off, restart and then it's fine. any ideas?

get it seen to :)

you may be lucky and it may only be a clutch pack.. but 4 speeds are expensive to get fixed.. get it seen to then start looking for a manual

Know where I can get hold of a aftermarket manual for the gearbox, or is it only in the ford workshop manual? Rather do it myself than pay some one to do a dodgy job!!
p.s. Manual's are for fuel misers!

The MAX ELLERY manual has a pretty good section on the trans to help with the rebuild..
