hey guys,
my mates currently rebuilding an xw and he was wondering if any of yous or your ford buddies have put a 4 speed auto into similar cars. Preferably behind a carby 302 or even 351, i know of people transplanting complete drive lines (i.e. xr8 engine gerabox diff into an xy) but he only wants the 4 speed auto, since hes got the engine and diff already. what would be involved eg. mounts, bellhousing etc. thanks in advance.
I've put an AOD into my old test-bed XA, and it was great. They bolt straight up to any 6 bolt bellhousing small block ford block ie. 302/351 windsor, 302/351 cleveland, but not 5 bolt 289 block. And the icing on the cake is that the driveshaft doesn't need to be modified either unless the upgrade is from FMX or C6. They are 0.5 inches loner than a C4, but the slip yoke takes this up easily.
I ran it behind a mild 351C, with a 2.92 diff ratio, and did 1600RPM at 60mph. Plenty of low down grunt too, as the convertor stall at more than 2200RPM (my wheels started spinning at this RPM). I raced my friend in his 78 camaro with 400 cu in and TH350, and I beat him. His car had previously run 15.1.
An AOD built right will handle 750HP. There is heaps of knowledge in USA and Canada - Lentech, Performace Automatic etc. A basic rebuild using some AOD-E parts, and 450HP engines won't cause the trans any problems. But, you must buy the right core, not just any AOD will do. A late model (91-93) 351W unit is the best core.
The only trick is the TV cable/rod adjustment. Get this wrong, and the trans will fry in 50k's. Talk to your local tranny shop on adjustment technique, or surf the web. That's where I found all my info.
My mate did a bit of research and found an xy that had been upgraded with EL XR8 running gear, the only major problem with the transmission was the mounts (as the 4 speed was longer) but unlike him my mate wont be using the engine management system for fuel injection, ignition and the transmission. Would anyone know if there is a way around this and if so what does it involve, any help would be greatly appreciated. (est prices, possible workshops in sydney, and more importantly is it possible and worht it?).
Im intrested in this conversion for my early falcon 302, what model falcons have the the AOD and is it the v8 model only and not the i6 as it sounds pretty much like a straight forward conversion.
How about physical size of the aod compaired to the c4

you could probably use a EB V8 4 speed box , and use an EA 6 cyl 4 speed auto computer to run it (teh EA's used a seperate computer for the auto than the EFi system, whuch was mounted up under the radio area)
if it would work, you'd need to set up some of the sensors for the box like the throttle position sensor(TPS) and maybe idle speed controler
you could ask some of the E Series boys about it might just work ya know
302xm no falcons have an AOD there from US mustangs and F series trucks as far as i know
EB to EL 6's and V8's use the BTR 4 speed
the V8 one is teh one to use though
and if you put it behind a windsor lucky you can use EFi windsor housing it will bolt straight up
