Sounds like maybe the 3-4 lever on the side of the gearbox may have been fitted upside-down some time in the past, maybe hanging down from the selector shaft instead of point up (or visa-versa, depending on your gearbox). This is not unusual, as I have seen this done a few times over the years (did it myself when I was a kid many years ago with an aftermarket floor shifter conversion on my FC Holden - learnt from that one ).
Undo the nut securing the 3-4 lever (the forward-most one) from the selector shaft, rotate the lever 180° (so it is pointing the opposite direction) and refit the nut. You may have to re-rig the shift selector rod (from the shifter to the gearbox selector lever) to get your neutral gate lined up again. Should solve your problem.
