confused 9" - Changing gears/lsd

I have a 9" 2.75 lsd and want to

1. replace the clutch plates (rebuild the lsd)

and

2. change from 2.75 to around ~3:1 gear ratio.

first off, how hard is it to rebuild the lsd. i found a kit for it round $150. and it needs it bad. sick of singles happening

Second, how much will a replacement new/secon hand set of gears cost me. And i also heard that it is a hella hard job to do...

any help is thanked.

Pitty your so far away. I have a perfect set of Ford 3.0's that I'd let go for a whole $50. Came from my 9" that had been reco'd recently with new gears. I changed to 4.11.

That rebuild kit obviously doesn't inc bearings?

Clutches/bearings to suit are usually around $350.

As for gears $300+ for new ones. S/H ones most people keep them in their car or sell the whole diff/centre. I've rarely seen people just sell gears over the last 2-3 years.

I've never changed the gears myself. I always leave it to the experts. I tried a diff once and stuffed it. DOH! Labour to reco and refit mine in the car was only $200.

Personally I'd stick with the 2.92 if you have a borg warner. 9" diffs are usually 2.75 for non-lsd and 3.0 for LSD.

You can use a 3.55 but personally I wouldn't want a 3.55 geared car for every day use as fuel consumption would be on a large and expensive side.

To sort of give you an idea. A 351 running a 2500rpm histall and 3.55 diff cost $120 to go from Melbourne to Shepparton one way. So $240 there and back.

Where a 2.92 geared 302 cost roughly $130 both ways.

So if you drive more than 10k's to work one way? 3.55's would be okay fuel wise but would still cost about $80 per week easy. Don't use anything less than 3.0 if you drive more than 10k's each way.

I have 4.11's with a 351. A simple 100k trip for me is $30-$40.
