I recently swapped my disc brake 9" for a drum brake 9", cause everyone I asked said they were about an inch shorter. It turned out it wasn't shorter but longer. It was supposed to be an xw-y diff but now I aint so sure. What I'm after is some info on 9" diff lengths, as I need one an inch shorter than the disc brake model. Maybe it wasn't a xw-y one but a F100 or Galaxie one, are they longer?
From memory xw-y 9inch diff are 1 inch shorter each side than xa-b-c 9 inch diff. Same mounting points. You may have a xa-b drum brake 9inch. F100 9inch diff have a bracket attached on each side on the axle housing, just in from spring mounting. This is for shock to attach to.
Thats exactly whats happened, you swapped a disc XW-XY diff for a drum XA-XB-XC diff. Your old one is worth a bit, but this new one you have now is easy to get.
The diff sizes are the same in each model between disc and drum.
If you want it shorter than XW-XY length then you must customise.
aren't all xw-y 9 inch diffs drum brake. I thought even xa gt's had drums and the discs only came out on xb-c's. Didn't Know you could get a drum 9" from xb-c. At least I know what a F100 one looks like now. What length is xw-y drum? or the shortest one you can get.

Reason: one more question
XY only in drum brake setup. Probably easier if your after a specific length to get your original one shortened. Had my disc rear shortened and all they did was rotate the axle tubes slightly so the disc calipers would clear springs etc.
XY were 1 1/2 shorter overall than XA on if memory serves
