AGH! Need help for my ZH fairlanes back end! - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

I just got home from a drive I wished I did not make. I was doing a u-turn on a 4 lane road, and yes it was legal, but since the turning circle of the ZH is comparrable to the USS Constellation, and the standard cars come around the corner at an inopertune time, I gave the thing a bit of gas with the wheel close to lock. ( I had to do a three point turn and did not have the opertunity to go back as far as I wanted, I got the car to move quickly but not loosing traction)

Trouble now is that when I am turning I hear bad noises from the black of the car... some clunks and I mean loud clunks! and when I am turning, the right wheel locks up and I hear screeching.

Anyone had a similar noise and knows what it is?

My guess is diff problems if the wheel is locking up. Is it an LSD or an open wheeler?

Although you say you lost no traction. I think you've done 1 of three things;

1) broken axle
2) broken spider gear
3) broken/worn bushes on/around the diff.

would a suitable solution be buy another diff ( i can get another LSD for it for $90)

what sort of difficulty is there in replaceing it... does teh whole leaf spring rear make it hard to do?

Even though you can hear undesirable noises. Access the damage first before you spend any money. A diff change will take about 2hours provided it's necessary to change it.
