Im looking to purchase a AOD for my Galaxie. I have found one, only problem is its an AOD-E.
I was just wondering whether you can put an AOD-E into a non-electric powered motor?
Can you convert the AOD-E back to mechanical?
Don't believe it can be done, Sorry!
Check out www.baumannengineering.com these guys know
all there is to know about american Ford trannies.
Why not investigate the aussie electronic 4 speed auto
that lives behind EBII and later Windsor V8's.
These had a seperate controller for the box and "not too difficult engineering"
for the kickdown, Xmember, sensors and wiring. Worth a look.
Then again, if you can get the electronics with the AOD-E, then check out
the site above and see what you can source here in OZ to make it happen.
Good Luck!!
Sorry, forgot to mention that all I said in the previous post
relates to Windsors and Clevo's.
If you're running a big block or 390 etc, I'd be doing the homework
on compatible trannies before spending any $$$.
Nah its for a 302Windsor.
I could probly hook a TPS up no worries. But im just worried about the ECU.
Would say an EF EEC5 ECU run the AOD-E? Or would i require to fork out the big bucks to get that Bauman one or something?
The later AU and BA trannies can handle quite high loads
and you can get a brand new one for $2150 including GST & convertor!
No ECU, but $150 from wreckers and $100 for shift kit upgrade and
it starts to look OK at $2500 for a new set up, much less for S/H.
It would cost at least that for Yank set up and unless you bring it
into OZ yourself from someone like Baumann, not many tranny
shops here have the experience with the Yank stuff.
There is a mob here in Melbourne that does the "Extreme" rebuilds,
can't remember their name at the moment, but you're still looking
at around $3000 and you supply the box and electrics.
Good luck and let us know how you go.
Will.
Well if i were to spend anywhere above $1500 id just get a supra 5spd and do it that way.
But i have the oppurtunity to pickup a AODE for $500, rebuild it myself hopefully.
And its about $500 for a Baumann TCU. So who knows.
Go for it mate!
Baumann can supply all the rebuild goodies and tech advice also.
The AOD-E is a better box than the earlier non electronic with
beefier internals and better gearing.
Please keep us posted as alot of us would certainly want the
4 speed auto behind our classic clevos and windsors.
Im actally tossing up whether to even bother getting the AOD now.
Its gonna cost about $1500 to just put in a basic AODE into my car, and for that much i can make my existing C4 pretty damn good!
What would the advantage of getting a AOD be? My mate says that with a big cam the overdrive gear is really effective, something to do with the engine vacuum at low revs...
Any ideas?
