Hi everyone,

I saw a thread posted in 2001 about the noisy whining sound that comes from the AU diffs when moving off. The post mentioned high-temperature automatic transmission fuild helping to quieten down the sound, and also help with the clunking sound too.

Can I ask if there is any consensus on this?

My car is an AU2 Fairlane.

Do not use ATF in your diff. It will destroy it. AU diffs generally whine because the bearings can go in them from as low as 40,000km.
