Hi everyone im just looking for some opinions on why my car (series 3 au xr8 manual) is making a whirring whining sort of noise (sounds like a supercharger) in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears once the revs get above 2500 rpm it has been doing it for a week now and the noise appears to be coming from the box as it only happens under load and it doesnt sound like a diff whine. it only does it in those gears not in 4th and 5th
the car is being looked at by ford next wednesday but im just curious for anyone who is in the know to give an opinion. the car has only done 15000kms and i dont drive it hard
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanx in advance regards from adam

is that the same as the layshaft bearings someone else i spoke to reckons its the layshaft bearings coz they r only under load in 1st 2nd and 3rd
id still like to know why the hell its making this noise after only 15000 kms

It is unlikely to be the layshaft (cluster) bearings, as if it were it would scream in fifth also. If there is no noise in fifth, only the primary gears, then it is more likely to be what I said previously.

yeh true about 5th but i wouldnt really know as it only does it at around 2500-3000 rpm and to do that in 5th in an xr8 means well over the point of loss of licence on most roads so i really havent tried it yet.
so really in either scenario the box will have to come out for them too fix it.
wouldnt it be nice if by mistake they put a mustang 6 speed in there lol

well my car went to ford todayfor the gearbox expert to have a look at my car he reckons its a noise that all v8 manuals make as because for the box to take the power they use straight cut gears and these cause them to make the noise, he said if to keep an eye on it and if the noise gets worse to report it
another thing they found wrong that my gearstick was too sloppy so they need to adjust ssome lever or rod to do with the stick

hi wild6,
the noise you are talking about is present in my au xr8 manual and it has never got any worse. i think its just the touque of the motor around 2500 rpm as thats when these things seem to get up and get going, making the gears in the box whine under load. i kind of have grown fond of the noise as like you said in your first post it sounds like a supercharger. makes me just want the real thing more. :-)

What an absolute crock of shit. I don't know how to post pics on here, but PM me your Email address and I will send you pics of the complete gearset. They ARE NOT straight cut, and if it is screaming, it is dying, end of story. Ben.
