Well from the symptoms i'm getting it looks like the 5th gear syncro may be wearing out. Driving normally the gears change like normal and i'm able to get into any gear.
However a good example where the 5th gear is hard to get into is merging on the freeway and accelerating (farily rapid) in 4th to about 110-120km/h and changing into 5th, there's a slight crunch to get into 5th. I done some research and got some advise that the 5th gear syncro ring is made of brass and is quite weak.
Just wondering if anyone else owning manual XR's have or are experiencing the same problem. If so, did the 5th gear syncro have to be replaced or was it something else. I have heard that they can machine the syncro to make it bite harder (ie deglaze the surface).
Cheers,
Gary.

Would this explain your loss to a certain car with four people(yes me, Cobra and a sub box) in it a couple of weeks ago?
Seriously though, ask Aaron. He had a similar problem.

Nah mate, i blame no LSD and blad tyres for that. I dial in 1200rpm and i get wheel spin. With LSD i can be alot of aggressive on the gas of the mark and slip the clutch and feed the throttle.
Yeah i've decided to ignore it for the moment and driving around today the gears seem to be working fine.
Cheers,
Gary.

Has the oil been changed to a too heavy grade?
Most troubles I have had with this type of problem has been oil
thats too thick..These box's are designed for thin oil....

The problem only happens when shifting from 4th - 5th, and is very slow trying to pick up 1st gear.
