Hey xchasr,

Cost depends on what you can find.
For instance, I bought a manual car for $800 and took the bits out - sold the motor and glass for $500, so the box owes me $300.
Then you're looking at paying more if you pay a mechanic...
Also, I believe stuff costs more in the Eastern States than it does over here. My advice would be: DONT!!! buy a box you can't drive, unless you can get a warranty. Wait a while, price up the parts you need, and see if a bargain comes along. It costs us $1500 for a recon box, w/out the other bits you need like bellhousings.....You know, just stuff like that. It is definitely worth doing, just make sure you're not getting ripped off hey. :)
What you need is explained in the post above, also get the relevant wiring diagrams from Ford (they should just give you a photocopy out of the Ford manual). This will ensure my description of the wiring will work for you.
Good luck man, hope this helps!
Alex

hey guys,

If you want to align the clutch, but dont want to spend money, and dont want to do it by hand, use the end of a hose.

You know those plastic fittings with the orange or yellow end you twist to change the spray.. brilliant clutch centering devices. Remove the twistie adjuster at the end, ad you're left with a pointy bit. Insert this in the clutch splines until you center it with the spigot bearing.

Worked wonders on my escort with celica 5spd!

My mother wasn't impressed with me using her hose fitting tho!

Just as easy on an older car as a newer one mate!
Probably easier as I don't believe the old XFs have electronic shifting......please correct me if I'm wrong.....
So you may not need to rewire anything!

I don't think it should matter, especially with swapping to a smaller engine. Anyone out there familiar with the XF gearboxes?

Bell-housing or whatever it is may be an issue, u never know... (i think they were a hybrid EA design, different to XD-E?)

Re: Auto to manual conversion guide

I hate to get picky about the details(well actually I do... hehe), but you forgot to mention you have to drop the swaybar down, otherwise the motor/transmission has a bit of an accident with them.

Anyways good article... I'd do the 5 speed manual conversion if i wasn't so damn lazy :(
