On the way back from work , I noticed something wierd about my car . When I changed the gear lever from drive to 3rd & 2nd there was no response . I stoped the car , put it first, then proceeded to drive in 1st. However , my car decided to pretend it was still in drive. I pulled over , turned my car off ,waited a bit , started it up again then drove off , testing the gears as I drove . The problem disapeared , later on the came back . I would really appreciate any advice anybody has regarding this problem .

When you had it in first, did it feel like it was changing up, or like it was stuck in a higher gear? Sounds like trans may have gone into limp home mode (sticks itself in 3rd....just like the add!!!!) Hard to say without driving it though. As for why, it goes into limp home mode when the trans ecu gets an input it dont like (ie sumpin stuffed up)

my EF does exactly the same thing, if im driving along in Drive and select 3rd or 2nd gear it wont have any response then after awhile of driving normally like it would if it were in Drive it will change down to 2nd. Also if im in 1st gear it will automatically change into 2nd 3rd then Drive, Ive recently serviced my gear box and changed the filter and I have not noticed any difference. So I cant help ya there, but hey, atleast your not the odd one out with a crazy gearbox!

Thanx anyway .
I once had an EB 6cyl & it had a problem where the gears would change when they felt like changing , sometimes going very haywire . The problem ended up being loose battery terminals. I haven't properly checked my AU's terminals But somehow I don't think that its the problem
