hey guys, this is whats going on.. latley my gearbox has been having a spastic.. When i put the selector in first.. it'll automatically change up into 2nd then 2 3rd then back to 1st.. sometimes if im slowing down i place the selector into 2nd it wont go into 2nd... whats wrong with it? I changed my oil and filter in it yesterday and that dident fix it.. all the wires in the box appear to be fine.. what could it be?
Might be entirely wrong about this, but from some stuff I was reading about auto gearboxes, if weird stuff is happening with second then it could be a problem with a part inside the box called a brake band. Apparently its one of the first things to go in an ailing auto. good luck anyway.
Could be any number of things... especially in modern setup's with electronic everything. They're fine until things start to go wrong - then look out wallet!!! Bite the bullet & take it to a specialist that you feel can be trusted if there is such a thing.
The single biggest enemy of the auto-trans is heat. I'm not familiar with the EF setup but I expect it's much like all the rest - with a trans cooler running through the engine's radiator. So while it's there at the specialists & fit an external cooler - a PROPER one not just a large diameter tube with some fins like they try to peddle at Repco...cos they do sweet FA.
Most likely the trans selector switch or sender, as it uses vaiable resistaance to tell the ECU what position the selector is in. (on the left of the box looking toward the front of the car)
It is a fairly common problem and is around $80 to replace.
Do you have any probs with it not starting sometimes when it in Park?
