Does anyone have recorded speeds through the gears for an Automatic AU2 or 3 V8 (base or XR8).

So far i have found that my car does 80km/h in first and 138km/h in second (both bouncing off rev limiter). I'm too scared to try third as I reckon it might be around the 180km/h mark (speed limiter will probably beat the rev limiter).

I got both my readings at Wakefield park on a recent track day. If anyone has a publication with the 'standard' speeds through the gears, or anyone's game to get just the first gear speed, I should be able to work out the rest.

Note - 6 cyl speeds are no good - I need the V8 ones!

I know you dont want the six cylinder results, but just for interest mine does over 80 in first, so does my dads 6 cyl EF fairmont. What is the rev. limiter set to?? This was just before redline, I have never tried to push the red line and wouldnt (if it is possible).

could the 6 cyl. higher speed in first be caused from a different gear ratio?? i cant remember off the top of my head what the ratios where.

It depends what gear ratio you have also maual and auto and v8 and 6. Yeh sounds about right for a 3.45LSD for an auto, bouncing on the rev limit, dont do it to much though otherwise valve bounce. And you wonder why they have 4 speed autos not for performance but FUEL economy, my eb 6 auto hit 4 at 190 and thats blown.

Thanks for the replies so far - any 8s out there who have done this (auto).

Standard gear ratio is 3.08 on my Forte - I think the XRs are 3.23 - possibly 3.45.

I held mine in gear and backed off just as it hit the rev limiter. I assume that all later models have a rev limiter, but I'm not sure - so don't try it unless you are sure as you will break your engine.

I decided to push the EA Ghia one night and ended up getting something like 107KMH out of first! This is with an auto, 3.9L, LSD and no mods. It was doing about 5500 and i decided it didn't like it so i changed to second! It's probably no wonder the rings and valve seals need replacing and the rocker gear rattles and taps! I haven't really pushed it in second, but normal WOT change speeds are about 75-80KM 1st-2nd and about 127KM 2nd-3rd.
Sorry its not a V8, but I just thought I would ad my bit in here....

1st and 2nd the same as yours on my XR8 3rd pulled a bit over 185 at a tad over red line, i put in 4th and saw it to 210 then fear got the better of me :)

Thanks XR8fella. The track I was on (Wakefield Park) would have seen me hit the wall if I had've tried to get to 180+. Max speed is around 150/160, which is why fear got the better of me too!

Thnaks for the info. It should come in Handy next track day, as I now know I can go around in '2', only changing to '3' on the front straight. Won't need 'D' at all, I'm afraid!

Mate - I always drive like I stole it! And Wakefield park is near Goulburn - NSW! The Konica cars ran there last weekend and FORD won.

AUII V8 Auto has 3.23 diff and 215/60 16 tyres as standard.
Kmh per 1000 RPM in gears will be 1st 15.1, 2nd 24.8, 3rd 36, 4th 53.
Therfore an AUII V8 will do 80Kmh in 1st @5300RPM and 132Kmh in 2nd @5300RPM. 180KMH is the speed limiter which will be all you see after that. AUII XR6 XR8 have no limiter and a 3.45:1 diff this cahnges the KMH per 1000 RPM to 1st 14.1,2nd 23.3, 3rd 33.7, 4th 49.6
