a few weeks back i posted something similar in the trans/tech forums, but it pretty much died after the 2nd reply due to my net being cut off :( .. anyways, i thought why not ask the more popular forum deticated to this model..
here's the rundown
my 12/94 ef atmo is playing up, i am under the impression it could be a certain chip due to the symptoms but i'd like to get more insight.
anyways, say i'm cruising in drive, down a road at about 80km/h all of a sudden the trans will slip into neutral and stay there most times unless i manually shift it into 3rd, or into neutral and back into drive. and usally after i've manualy shifted it into 3rd, it will eventually slip back into neutral if i don't change it back to drive...
confused yet? lol
sometimes when driving around town at the slower speeds, it will just go ballistic like i have a shift kit installed (I don't btw) and will just slam down into 1st/2nd when i lightly touch the throttle. or will do the opposite and stay like a slug in 3rd/4th and not change..
also, 8 times out of ten, when she's working right and i want to manually put it into 2nd to engine brake a hill, it will not change..
hopefully i can get some help here and get down to the bottom of it, it's giving me the shits. and if/after it's fixed, sell the thing and get myself another manual :)

If this is something you do often, there is the cause of your problem.
Engine braking is for semi's and cork braked cars of the late 1800's. Modern cars have efficient disk brake setups so you don't need to use your engine/transmission to slow you down.
Basically your tranny will have overheated and (hopefully) done nothing more than cook the fluid, which is easily fixed. If not, then your up for a replacement tranny which is approx $3000 (compared to $80 for a set of brake pads).
no, i've only had the car a short while ( under 1 month ).. sorry it was a bit over exadurated, it was an example, a very badly worded one at that... :p don't know where i pulled the engine braking crap out of lol, sounded good at the time O_o
basically, a guy said he had the problem, and the way to check it was to manually shift and drive to see if it changes, it does.
was just wondering if it was a common e-series problem due to a specific waring part, to change/or save me from some bs mechanic price-hike talk but i guess it can't be too common.
I was told before i bought the car that it was recently serviced (the trans) that is.. appeared to be a genuine bloke, but meh..the fluid is clean/full.. but, i guess i'll have to make time to get it down to an atmo trans place and get it checked/serviced/fixed.
