AX4N Transmission

I have a transmission problem with my 97 Ford Tarus. ( Trans. AX4N ) The Transmission has a winding sound and auto shift is hard. We have the transmission removed, thinking it was the torque converter. The fluid seems to be ok and was changed about 35000k ago. No cuttings are present in the fluid, torqe or the filter. The sound in the transmission is also present at idle.
I would appreciate any tips for trouble shooting this problem.

Thanks: Warren

Re: AX4N Transmission

Warren,

Harsh forward engagements indicates a possibility of a few things.

1. Incorrect fluid levels
2. shift linkage damaged or misalligned.
3. Main control valve body gaskets damaged or even the Main CVB retaining bolts could be loose.
4. oil pump casing leaking or damaged.
5. Low and intermediate servo seals damaged.
6. Low and intermediate bands/rear sun gear/drum assembly, damaged or worn.

I would do the following.

Check the fluid levels.
Check those DTCs!(Take it to autozone if you can and have them check for codes. The ECU stores codes for the trans as well as the engine.)
Make sure the shift linkage is properly adjusted.
Perform a Line pressure check.
Perform a Stall speed test.
