I have done 60,000 kms in my BA XT 6 cylinder.
The BA has a sealed unit auto box. You can’t even check the fluid level, or indeed check the condition of the fluid for that matter.
So the fluid in my BA must be a nice colour by now.
A check of the service manual states that “fluid changes are not required unless the vehicle is operated continuously under severe conditions.”
I am thinking of getting the transmission serviced. Am I wasting my time? Or do I wait until the transmission plays up before I do something?
Is there special oil in these things?
How long will they last under normal conditions if I don't service it?

id serice it anyways... not very expensive and would save it from going down the shitta later

its rediculous that ford claim these are a sealed unit. Id recomend a service and flush every 30,000km. its only $150 for peace of mind an a long gearbox life

I strongly suggest that you find a reputable transmission specialist to service your auto.
I had my ED trans service once at a Ford dealer and twice at a mechanic's workshop and it only lasted 110,000 k's only to be told it wasn't serviced properly, hence it's early demise.

They are not a sealed unit and have a bung on them to check oil and can be serviced by your ford dealer. (told by dealer when purchased new car)

If your gunna get the auto serviced, go to a reputable dealer as JG33 suggested. I decided to get my tranny serviced at a place that offered a service for under $80, which included an fluid change. I took it there bout two weeks before I took the car off the road (at that time I didn't know I was going to be overhauling the entire car). The car sat motionless for about 4-5 months until it was time to take the engine and trans out. When we did so, what did we find?? The fluid in the tranny was JET BLACK, they didn't touch my transmission.
