Not sure on what Ford call acceptable, but you need to isolate the backlash from across the half shaft CV joints to measure the crown wheel/pinion backlash correctly.

Backlash in basically any assembly is the amount of overall movement in one member, ie pinion, before contact (and then movement) occurs in the next member in the system, ie crown wheel. Most 7.5" to 9" crown wheels have between 3 and 14 thou backlash measured at the crown wheel. Not enough, they will whine and suffer damage, particularly when hot. Too much and they will clunk, and suffer excessive wear in on/off applications.

It is the clearance between the ring gear and the pinnion gear. If you rock the ring gear back and forth you will feel a amount of movement before it stops against the next tooth. You can measure this amount with a dial indicator and magnetic base. To give you an idea of the actual backlash needed; a 9" needs 0.2 to 0.3mm.
