I was told when I got the T5 conversion done that the gearbox needed to be reco'd, but I didn't realise just how soon...
The bloody thing died on Saturday nite coming home from work. i was trying to get out in front from a green light, not revving it that hard, changed into 2nd and heard a big knock from the gearbox then a constant clunking 'metal on metal' sound after that that went right through the floorpan. One mechanic I rang today reckons I might have broken some gear teeth or something. Anyway, it's getting towed to the mechanics tomorrow morning and then they'll tell me what my options are after they have a look/listen to it. I'm not expecting it to be cheap.
While it's being built up though I'm thinking of getting a short shifter fitted. Does anyone have one fitted to their Ford and if so what type and how much was it? I've seen the SVO ones but are there any others?
Also, while it's out, would it be worthwhile tricking up the box a bit? What could I do to make it stronger?
Gee thats harsh.. worst comes to worst you'd have to change the gearbox which would cost around the $600? mark im assuming.. I'd suggest a T56 anyday, but they're too damn expensive!!
Goodluck dude!
Get a toyota supra box. Yours is already a manual so you want have to spend heaps of money. The box is about $450 to $500 & it will last you years & years of normal driving. I've seen them behind 351's & they just keep going.
Sorry to hear it. Hopefully you'll still be ahead financially after this is sorted out. I am interested to read about the other transmission options people are suggesting though. I have postponed this mod myself due to financial reasons, but it's still worth knowing for the future.

Hey SPHELL my box is starting to get noisy as well.Iam looking at about $600 plus for a rebuild.I have told the guy that the motor is putting through roughly 190-195kw,he then told me that there are some tricks he knows which will make it stronger and last.He was surprised it has lasted this long.He didn't tell me what these tricks though.Acclerating in 5th hasn't helped me as well.
With regards to the shifter B&M have what they call a "Ripper Shifer" for the T5.I think its a straight bolt up.But there is not that much wrong with the shift on the EA anyway I think.Another thing that could be done while the box is being repaired is to replace the stock detent spring and ball with the softer detent spring and ball as used in the EL GT.This is meant to improve the shift and feel.
Ahhh... Bad Luck Doug!
I feel sorry for ya mate, hope it all works out.
I have heard about a few products like SVO shifters, with a price tag of $200-300. IMO, its a little too pricey, I just opted for the alloy mig wielder job, and I love it!!
The GT ball & spring sounds ok as well.
Take care, let us know how it all goes.
