Does anyone have info on the interchangeability of Borg Warner diff centres. I have an XT and would like to put a limited slip centre in the diff when I get it rebuilt. Are the centres interchangeable with the later models? I know the axles are different as XA onwards were wider and had different wheel bearings. XY 9" Diffs are getting a bit hard to find and seem to go for $500+ and then you usually have to rebulid them anyway, thats why I'm looking at a Borg Warner one.

Hey Tote,

First we need to determine which diff you have. XR's and some XT's had 75(7.5" ring gear) series Borgies and later some XT's and everything from then on had 78 series BW's(7.8" ring gear).
If you still have a tag it'll either say SER 75 or SER 78. Otherwise compare your back cover with that of say an XA up diff.

Apparently centres interchange in 78 series housings up to about XF(I say about because it's a bit of grey area where it crossed over). Of course most have 25 spline axles and 2 pinion LSD's which won't last under any sort of power. The Four pinion LSD's in XD/E have 28 spline axles and are the most desirable. Of course they only came behind 351's or as an extra heavy duty item in utes. The only real way to tell when buying is to rip an axle out.

It's been suggested to me that EA up are all 28 spline(open or LSD) but that the centre is not compatible with earlier housings....DOH!

My suggestion is: use an XY/ZD housing and an XD/E 28spl 4pin centre. Then see if you can fit 28spline XY type 9" axles into it.

It's starting to look like an easier proposition to use a 9". Of course if you aren't concerned about torque capacity the lighter weight of the borgy helps and so may be worth the effort.

Should be able to pick up a an early Fairlane pretty cheap with a 351 & 9", sell all the bits you don't need and you should have a 9" that owes you SFA if anything at all.

You can still use the wider XA-XD diff in the XT.They are about 3/4" wider each side than the XY diffs. It doesn't make a big difference unless you have big tyres that are a tight fit in the gaurds already..
