The auto in my EL XR8 has recently started to clunk into gear on random occasions. I was cruising along last night when it made a really hard shift up and thumped into gear and then it thumped back down a gear, without me even changing how much accelerator I was using. It has done this at least 3 times in the past month. After it did that it went back to working perfectly. Whats going on, are the solenoids playing up or is the whole gearbox on the way out.

Both are possible.

Get the fault codes taken out.

If the spark plug leads are faulty, they can cause odd shift patterns due to stray voltage.

Sounds like a inhibitor switch problem. Have your car read for fault codes if it shows all clear try another one anyway. Faulty switches dont always produce fault codes.
