would i have to pay any import duty or stuff like that??
also, is there much difference between US Head units versus Australian ones? the only difference i'd think there'd be would be the radio perhaps..
looking at a clarion DXZ835MP deck. (clarion decks are cool coz i can match em to the EBII orange light dash) i can get that for USD$269 . works out to just under AUD$500 including freight, where most places in WA are selling that deck for $899.
yeah you would have to pay import duty when it goes through customs. However, I've known people that get their items without paying any import duty. It's just the luck of the draw I think. If it's a largish package though then it will most likely be checked. Things have changed since I imported my amps. The GST has been introduced since then. I think it's actually better now...you only have to pay 10% of the declared value as duty. I remember paying way more than that.
The radios on US decks are basically the same and will work fine here providing they have a frequency selector switch or setting. FM will work regardless of this switch but AM may or may not. Its because they change frequency in different steps...for example over here our AM band moves up and down in 11khz steps. In the US it moves in 10khz steps. But who listens to AM anyway right?

Thank you for your e-mail.
Electrical goods usually attract 5% customs duty and 10% GST. We convert
your US$300 to Aust$'s using the exchange rate on the date of export. This
conversion is now called the Customs Value. The first amount payable is your
duty, which is 5% of the Customs Value. The following is your GST
calculation: Customs Value + duty + cost to transport & insure the goods to
Australia. GST IS then 10% of this total and is payable as well.
