I have a weird issue. I've managed to split two now. A mate of mine and I were crawling around under the car today. Sorting a few things. We found a small problem. Split the bellhousing again!

Anyone know what causes it and a possible sollutions.

split the bellhousing how, in what direction?
the only thing i can think of is maybe your pushing a bit too much torque through your gearbox and the cast alloy bellhousing maybe can't handle it

Front to back just under the starter this time. Last time it was around the top.

I've had a closer look and the best way to describe it is shattered. It's got at least 4 major cracks in different areas. My guess is I broke it launching @ the track.

Launching could do it, especially if the rear mount isn't up to the task of holding the trans down.

Are both aligning dowls in the block?
Make sure the bellhousing bolts are not bottoming out before they exert the correct clamping force & use spring washers.
Was there any vibrations before you noticed the bell housing damage. Vibrations will crack bellhousings.

Yup. both locating dowels are there. Rear mounts less than 25,000's old, so are the engine mounts. Bell housing bolts aren't bottoming out.

The only vibration I had was after I turn the uni into mash when I launched.

Rough guess that that mighta been the cause....
Good reason to go to a steel Burst proof I imagine! (steel far more ductile (% elongation) than cast alloy and stronger outright!)

They don't make steel bellhousings for autos. I think I may start saving for a 2 speed powerglide. As their bellhousings won't shatter.

Are you sure? I'm sure I've seen one (could be wrong, have been in the past)? C4s especially cos they don't have the pump paths as part of the bellhousing? (could potentially have a toploader steel bell modified?)
