(sorry im not a good storyteller)
ok. I was just crusin' with my friends, doing nothing stupid, then the thing 'popped' hardcore with a shudder so big it shot the centre speaker grill (XD) flying doing the middle of my car. Turns out the thing doesn't downshift from Drive, ie. if I slow down to under 20km/h or stop, then try to go again (not just foot to the floor) it'll rev like its in neutral. However, it isn't completely broken as I can quite happily start out in 1 or 2 and shift into any gear manually. Also reverse is not doing anything. I'm praying it's just cause the autos got very little fluid in it (sorry to the auto). I definitely haven't snapped anything - right??? (cause all the gears do work)(trying to reassure myself) - RIGHT??????

Sounds like you've blown top gear. If i remember right reverse and top use the same clutch. I'd guess you've just hurt the clutches and nothing else. I've had a circlip in the auto pop off and do what your describing too.

thing is it still goes into third. is what you've suggested is it expensive / hard to fix? the guy i got it off says he rebuilt it - what a load of bs!

Could be just a band. I'd suggest not driving it anyway except to a trans shop. Leave it there and get a taxi home. The more you drive it the worse it'll get.

Theres a difference between putting something back together and rebuilding it Auto's don't like sitting around too long once rebuilt either. Clutches get installed wet. Once sitting around the clutches dry up. Doesn't take long to destroy them.

OK despite what you said i did drive it again this morning, after adding 1 litre of fluid. Turns out reverse works just fine, but it doesn't downshift into 1st either when stopping or with kickdown. And now that I've had a look I think it mightn't even be a C4. Except in 2 it does start off in 2nd and not 1-2 like the B/W. It goes just like it always did, there aren't any weird noises.

Should I drop the pan to see if anything's fallen off or just leave it?
Think I just better take it to a 'shop.

If you drop the pan the only thing you'll be able to do/see is debris or nothing at all. It wouldn't hurt to remove the pan. Gives you an excuse to give it a wipe out. Ether way I'd get a trans shop to do a road test and possibly service it.

You know that's exactly what my mum's mechanic down at the local BP said! Just from a test drive he reckons i've turned the forward clutch (i think) inside out?? I'll be up for $1k for a whole new box, with kevlar bands and a new torque converter. That's not bad with labour, but he reckons it's gonna be fine if I just drive it like a manual until I get the cash, sell the car or it dies.

I do have another one sitting in a XD that hasn't moved for a month, but I don't know the condition of it (plus my folks don't know about the car!)
