What is the usual buying price for a decent C4 auto?

Ive seen usually go between $300-500 dependant on condition. I picked up a C10 about 5 years back for $300, inc torque converter from a mustang which I put into a ZJ fairlane not long after. But I did get it checked out b4 fitting it. There is a place in SA which do recon changeover c4's for $395-$495 dependant on availability.

Depends on what your after. I got a full manualised (transgo), stage III shift kit, billet input shaft, billet servo and a solid band rebuilt for $1055. Auto like this should handle 550-600hp.

Auto prices will range from $500 and up.

so what is the go with shift kits in the C series automatics, i heard that by drilling out the oil input line in the valve body will give you shift quality like a stage 1 shift kit, something about the increased pressure your letting into the transmission. is this true or was i being led astray

nobody knows? or is it just easier to get the valve body that has already been shift kitted?

A shift kit consists of gaskets,springs and ball bearings. What happens is a trans specialist just fits the kit to your valve body and drill holes if necessary. Best left to the specialists. It costs bugger all anyway. It's not something you can cost cut because if it's done wrong? The trans won't function correctly. Which in turn will cause trans damage.

Personally I wouldn't go any less than stage II.

Damn thats a good price! How does it handle the abuse?

I wasn't going to go auto in the V8 for a while yet, but at that price I might be switching sooner rather than later!

The manual is just causing me too many problems ATM...
