Commodore's first gear

in the v6 auto it redlines in first at 65km/h

in my v8 fairlane it redlines in first at almost 100km/h!

both redlines are at 5500rpm

the v6 rockets to 60 and then loosed quite a bit of go once in second. Also it seems that the thing is at wide open throttle in the first 5mm of pedal movement and then theres nothing else the rest of the way to the floor.

I far prefere the commodore gear ratios, Who gives a toss about fuel consumption, i want those ratio's on my fairlane!, is it possible? how????

Yeah mate the Commo auto's have a shorter 1st and 2nd gear hence it does feel more punchier.

here are the ratio's

Ford BTR Auto 4 Speed:
1st 2.39
2nd 1.45
3rd 1:1.00
4th 1:0.68

Holden 4 speed:
1:3.06
1:1.63
1:1.00
1:0.70

A 3.9:1 diff ratio would do the trick....

Im going for a manual conversion and diff ratio change to get some decent gearing in my car.

The gearing in the auto really gives me the shits too!

how are the manuals geared in comparison to the auto?
(I'd assume more like the auto commodore)

The Commodore seems to have a looser torque converter as well.

Does the LS1 powered v8's have the same gear ratio's in the auto as the v6?? you'd black out from the g-force..

I guess the fuel consumption might be an issue with those gear ratio's on a falcon.. Is it at all possible to change the gear ratios without changing the dif, i mean modififying the actual automatic?

ive thrashed the hell out of this commode for 3 days and its used about as much petrol as my fairlane does in one day of normal driving
:dead:

how do they achieve this?

Shorter gearing would probably give you better economy around town as it's more likely to be in a meatier part of the torque curve at any given moment. I'm gonna fix my Fairmont with a 3.73 LSD pretty shortly.. i've never heard of anyone actually modifying the auto to have different gear ratios.

As for your V8 using alot more petrol - that's what happens when u compare a 3.8L to a 5L with very restrictive heads/intake

you cant change the gear ratios in your auto, unless you can finde somewhere that can make you a new set of planetary gears for it, at a price of about a bazillion $$$.

find out what gearboxes will fit behind your engine and then find out the ratios in them, then make it fit.

a lower diff ratio will help a lot, and a slightly higher stall converter will get you off the line quicker.

what year model fairlane and commo are we talking about? you have to factor in the weight of the vehicles in question, as weight has a huge impact on performance and fuel economy.

There is a way to sort of change the ratios, as yours in a 5.0L V8, you can grab a AOD from the US and bolt it on....

I think they have a huge range of ratios available aftermarket wise.
