Ok that noise IS unfortunately coming from the diff. It only happens when the car is hot and when turning corners. It's a lot worse in reverse. It's a kind of creaking/grinding noise when going round corners and the same noise happens plus a knocking noise when turning very slowly and/or in reverse. It's a 3.23 LSD. I topped it up with LS90 diff fluid, but it didn't seem to fix a thing! Any ideas??

You want to hear a real loud diff ? hehe i got one hella sheat. anyhow back to you, it could be a bearing ? Check the diff oil also for grittiness, some teeth could be dying.

I think it may be the bearings as it only makes a noise going around corners, if it was teeth wouldn't it be making the noise constantly? How much are bearings to replace? Or worst case scenario.....the diff insides??

Mine is noisy also. Sounds like a Waaa Waaa Waaa and gets quicker as vehicle speed increases. Thats upon the zeeeeeeeeeeeee noise the diff already makes.

I think it would be better just to get another diff. I have one for my S-Pac which is $200 (I have yet to pick it up). From what Ive learned the inside of a diff need to be exactly right when reconditioned and this is something only profesionals can do.

I went to a couple of transmission places today. One reckon that the diff just needs a clean out and the fluid needs to be replaced plus additive in the fluid, they quoted $90. The other place said it has something to do with the cup and cone, they said it may need shimming etc and quoted me $400. Who do I believe?? The first place did my S5 solenoid and I haven't had a problem since, the bloke has been round here for like 20 yrs dealing in this stuff and he pretty much told me what was wrong with it before I finished talking. I only said that it make a strange noise when going round corners, then he said "let me guess, it only happens when the car is hot and it may occasionally give a few knocks and stuff". He was exactly right so maybe it is only the fluid that needs to be replaced. I added some the other day in an attemp to fix it and it took nearly the whole bottle, so i can't have had much in it.

I'm going to have to get something done about it soon as the car has to go on a 5hr trip to Sydney at the end of the week and back early the next week and I don't want to risk blowing the diff up on the way!!

I'd say go with the first one, if the oil was low it obviously has a leak anyway so it would be best to get a new gasket/seal before you go on the trip.
you may find you have a little metal shavings etc in there...a good clean out and new oil MAY fix it...only one way to fins out?
what do you think guys?
90 bucks is an ok price for an oil and gasket change anyway...messy SMELLY job playing around with diffs....god that oil stinks and boy is it hard to get out of clothes etc

Actually while you are there get him to replace the rear wheel bearings...if theyre as old as the car it'd be worth changing them...beside their seal might be the cause of the leak also....
