I want to change the ratio from 2.77 to 3.45 in my XF. Is it as simple as replacing the ratio's or do i need a whole diff.

I remeber hearing from somewhere that you can't change the 2.77 but you can change the 2.92. Is this accurate?

And how much would it cost for the 3.45 gears?

From the discusison I had with a Diff guy last year, the whole housing will need to change. A 3.45 gear set has a different diameter to the 2.77 set so you cant just bolt the gears on. Thats what they told me anyway...

Is 3.45 critical? You can buy a 3.23 staight out of a XE and bolt it straight in.
That's what I did.

Heaps of 2nd hand diffs in the Quokka. You can pick them up pretty cheap from there. Got a 2.92 lsd out of an EA, complete with disks, calipers for $100 AU.
Some time ago saw a 3.45 out of an XR6 for $300 AU. Didn't have the money, else it would be under the XF now. Maybe next time. Just got to keep looking when i get some spare $$$$$$.

LTDHO : no the 3.45 was just an idea of what to get. How hard would it be to get an XE 3.23 diff with a disc setup and coil springs? Or could i get the gear set and chuck it in mine?

My diff is fairly worn, and i have a feeling it wont see the next couple of months so i'm just weighing up options at the moment.

Did the 3.23 have a good improvement in your car?

I believe the 3.23 lsd came out in the GHIA XE. Go wreckers.

You will find 3.23 under 3 speel manual ute and panelvans. I noticed alot from going to a 3.23. Good value.
A 3.45 out of a XR6 or XR8 will fit. you have to use the XF gear cover though. 3.23 will bolt straight up, no probs.
I cleaned mine, painted it gloss black and replaced the oil. Not 'cause I had to but I wanted too.

If i was to get a 3.23 out of an XE ute/panelvan, my only concern would be that its a) not disc setup and b) its leaf spring.

Would it be easy to convert it?
