Ever since I've had my 91 EA GL it's had a 'whomp' noise coming from the diff whilst driving on occasion. Recently as this noise has gotten worse and more frequent, I took it to my mechanic to take a look at it.. I thought it was the unijoint, but it's the diff.
He's quoted me $400 for a rebuild of the stock diff, my other option is going to the wreckers and pulling out a diff and axles off of a later model car- my question is, which models are going to be a straight swap in regards to the stuff such as the handbrake etc.?
complete diff (disc to disc) - EA-ED will suit.
EF-EL will require mods for handbrake.
That's right. Although the EB2-ED has different lower trailing arms and bolts to the tailshaft differently, so you will need to replace the trailing arms and either fit an EB2/ED tailshaft or use the EA yoke on the diff.

Dave's right about about the trailing arms and diff yoke being different from EB2 to ED.
That said, a S/H diff from a later model is a better thing.. less k's etc.. It's a bit more work but worth the effort.
You can either change the lower arms or change the rear bush in your existing arms to suit the wider axle housing brackets.
And make sure you also get the longer trailing arm bolts that go with the new diff.
Get the tailshaft than goes with the flange type diff, and the 4 flange bolts.. it's a better way than changing the yoke in the new diff.
You may also have to drill another mounting hole in the spash plates if the new diff was fitted with ABS.
aparatenly u carnt just transfer the brakes over to say an ef diff.... as they tubes have the flanges welded on a different angle, or somthing so that if u fit youre ea breakes to an ef diff they sitt up side down or somthing, i havnt tried this this is what a diff shop told me
