Depends on why it's whining. An older car might whine because the diff wasn't shimmed correctly, after a rebuild. This won't cause much concern. If it's the factory diff (hasn't been touched) then a whine will indicate a bearing on the way out, probably pinion bearing. As it gets worse it will wreck your crown wheel and pinion.
