I have a 2004 crown vic with the p71 package, locking diff...
I just replaced the axle bearing and cannot get the spring installed for the life of me. Is it possible to install the spring without special tools? What will happen if i leave the spring out?

(The spring I am talking about is a tensioned pc of metal that ford calls a spring. It is installed in between all four gears when you are looking at the diff with the cover off.)

When I install those springs I use two small vise grips and clamp the eges together and tap it in with a small hammer. It is very tricky and will cause u to cuss alot and wish u had a second pair of hands, but it will go in. If u leave it out your limited slip won't work.
