Diffs

Silly question maybe but anyway. What is involved in converting the 3.08 in an eaII to 3.7/3.9 and what model car has it stock if any. I'm in no rush and would prefer to wait for a good deal before i do it but if it's an aftermarket thing i can wait.

Re: Diffs

the shortest ratio you can get from a falcon is a 3.45 (out of a xr6) i put mine it and she goes great. a few guys have the shorter ratios which i think are from skylines. abit more work is involved you have to get gears lapped. i am sure that someone with more knowledge will post.

Re: Diffs

Well from my limited knowlege the best way to go about it is.

Use an ED onwards diff to benifit from 28spline axles.
Grab 3.7, 3.9 or 4.11 (from auto skyline(R30/1), Manual skyline(R30/1), Pintara)
Get it installed.
Paint the streets black

Re: Diffs

whats this stuf about 28 spline axles? I've been planning a diff centre upgrade for a while now (wanna go 3.45 LSD instead of 3.23 LSD) will this upgrade be worth it or not?? also, is it just as simple as taking the old centre out and chucking the new one in or do I have to get the entire EB xr diff???

Re: Diffs

Personally, I don't think those diff from skyline is good for this purpose. Those diffs from skylines are pretty weak and wear quickly. Even with a stock skyline, they don't really last very long, most skyline owners complain about the noisy diff and the service life of that, really don't see the point of doing so.

Re: Diffs

I'm also thinking about doin the same, getting a 28 spline diff for strength in a 3.45 ratio. But do i just change the centre or do i go for the whole axle?

Re: Diffs

as stated above, 3.7's, 3.9's and 3.9 are obtained from skyline/pintara's from the rb30 era.

you can also get 3.7's from the 4 cyl cortina b/w diff's

the ed falcon diff are best to use for a ea-eb they have 28 splines (essentialy the same as 9 inch) and a stronger centre and axles.

the ef's and newer have the same 28 spline axles as the ed's but the input pinion length is different so you would have to install a ef or el tailshaft into a ea-ed if you plan on running a ef or newer diff.

the strongest b/w diff you could make for a ea-ed would be a ed housing and ed xr8 centre with ed axles and a BRAND NEW GEARSET with a detriot locker. (this set up have been shown to last in a 600rwhp car)

the brand new gearsets have a different curvature on the teeth which allow them to cope with more torque/abuse only downside is they cost 800 odd bucks for the gears alone :(

cheers.joe.

if you change to a 28 spline centre you will have to put in 28 spline axles, as the pre- ed falcon has 25 splines except in SOME xr and v8 versions.

Re: Diffs

Joe: I just installed an EF diff into my EB no drama's. only things different are the whole brake setup, the breather tube is mounted further out making the brake lines the wrong length and the sway bar retainer clips are a bolt and nut setup securing them unlike the bolt and clip on ea - ed.
