Question Does a C4/9/10 fit an EL bellhousing???

Does anyone know if a C4/C9/C10 V8 auto will fit a STANDARD EF-L bellhousing?
eg: is a custom bell housing required or is it a bolt on?

I refer you to the EF featured at

which is quoted as using a C4.

*Info required for part of the turbo EF donk into XE conversion. Already have a T5 but i'm concerned it won't hold up to the power.

I didnt think they made C9's, i only knew of C4's C6's and C10's *shrugs*

anyone shed any light on this?

Here's the difference..C4,5,9 and C10 are all basically the same trans with some differences between them. These are some of the differences:

C4 -
Smaller 24 spline input shaft
Bellhousing and pump share same bolts
trans casing has a 'step' at the front near the bell
filler tube enters case
breather tube exits case near selector lever

C5/C9 -
Larger 26 spline input shaft
Bellhousing and pump share same bolts
trans casing has a 'step' at the front near the bell
filler tube enters case
breather 'cap' in trans extension housing at top
C5 pan has larger capacity than C9 pan

C10 -
Larger 26 spline input shaft
Bellhousing and pump use seperate bolts
trans case has smooth transition to bellhousing mount
filler enters pan
breather 'cap' in trans extension housing

This is how to id them externally. There are minor differences internally so some parts won't interchange, ie valve bodies.
C10 Bellhousing won't fit C4,5 and C9 however C4,5 and C9 bellhousing will fit C10 with longer pump bolts. I believe all C10 bellhousings are designed for the larger 164 tooth flex however C4-C9 housings are available for 164 or 157 tooth flex.

C5,9 and C10 are slightly stronger due to larger input shaft. Beyond that there ain't much difference. Things to watch when swapping is to use the correct bellhousing and converter(24 or 26 spline, 157 or 164 tooth flex compatibility) and also use the correct valve body if swapping.

Thanks that was really useful to identify the particular V8 auto that i have laying around. I wasn't sure exactly what it was until i read that.

But to anyone who can answer the specific question...

DOES IT FIT AN EL BELLHOUSING?
If not, then what did the guys from PET (follow the original link) do to fit the C4 into that EL?
Re-drill the C4 pattern on the EL housing or what?

if only the C4 was a 4speed. Might have to look into an AOD. However a stage 2 C4 is only arround $1500 with highstall. AOD or AOD/E is $2k+ with the same stuff.

Is the EL windsor block the same as the ED one?

The reason that I ask is that I have a fully rebuilt AOD tranny from an F100, and have bolted it straight onto a 93 5.0 HO motor. My understanding is that the c4 and the AOD have the same bolt pattern, one of course has an overdrive. The only thing you need of course is the appropriate flexplate. From memory, EFI is 5o oz, Non is 26 oz? Counterweight that is.

My AOD has a 7 clutch pack, strengthened input shaft and a 2000 stall.

What's involved in a stage 2?

Ahhh, just read the article. 6 cylinder EL.

Drop in a 5.0, and you won't have to worry whether it fits or not!
