Dyno - what gear do they use in a manual (3rd?) and how do they dyno autos?
Just curious, according to my dyno graph, I reckon it was tested in 3rd gear, going by the cutout speed and estimated revs and rev limiter cut in, and also based on max torque at what km (and assumed revs at those km)....
And how are autos tested on a dyno since they will keep changing up or down gears....do they just do it in first and hold it there?

Manuals are usually tested in 4th gear (one the 1:1 ratio) and autos in 3rd gear (usually 1:1 ratio)

Spot on, If there not getting run like that put your money back in your pocket and drive away, Also the dyno must be in shootout mode or you could get all sorts or of numbers........

Re: Dyno - what gear do they use in a manual (3rd?) and how do they dyno autos?
Thanks for that but I'm still not sure how they hold the autos in gear...
And I am looking at my dyno graph right now.... both before and after chip the cut out is at around 170km/h - is this because it meets the rev limiter (not in 4th coz I have done more than 170km/h in 4th myself) OR because they just cut it once it reaches peak power? Also, according to the chart, the torque peaks at around 90km/h before and after the chip, and that if this is in 4th, that is at pretty low revs - not what Ford claim max torque is (3700ish) for mine... hence I thought it was done in 3rd....because that would make sense - the torque would be peaking right at about Ford's claimed revs if it was in 3rd at that speed.... I am just guessing though... It is also not far off maximum torque at the start of the test, which is at 85kw and 75km/h.....I would be quite sure there would not be enough revs at 75 in 4th to pull that kind of torque....
Maybe I just don't know what I am talking about - might have to ask.
It was definitely done in shootout mode. And why not in 3rd????

Re: Dyno - what gear do they use in a manual (3rd?) and how do they dyno autos?
BA autos are put in 3rd gear in manual mode and it will stay in 3rd until it is changed by the dyno operator after the run is complete. It will be accelerated until it hits the rev limiter. 4th gear gives direct drive to the rear wheels and is not geared down or up like it is in other gears which would multiply the torque and therefor power. ( I think ).

Cool, I think I geddit - my dyno graph just confused me - me must be stoopid or sumthin.

I probably should have made my question clearer.... I realise that in the BA you can hold 3rd no probs in the auto. But how would you dyno an AU auto, which cannot hold gear like a BA auto....?
