Hey guys,

I really should have learned my lesson by now!! BUY A 5 SPEED NOT AN AUTO.

This will be the third car that I have converted to 5 speed. Anyway, I am just wondering what the exact differences are between the E-series T5's and the AU T5's. I know the AU box is longer than the e-series versions. Can an e-series box be fitted by using the extension housing and top cover/shift rail off and AU box? I have called just about every wrecker in NSW and none of them have any 5 speed AU's!! I can get a new one through a place in Sydney for about $2500. Thing is, I don't want to spend that much on the whole conversion, let alone just the box!!!

I also need to know whether anything else from an e-series will fit into the AU. I have a full conversion kit (minus the box) for an e-series sitting in my driveway.

I do realise this is going to cost a lot more than what my previous conversions have due to the AU being a lot newer, but I'm hoping a bit of the e-series gear will fit. If not, anyone interest in a conversion kit minus the box??

It's originally off an EA. But went into my EBII no worries at all. It will also go into an EF-EL except you will have to get the shifter surround to suit.

It's the extension housing that's longer. Meaning you'd have to change the whole mainshaft and possibly the gearset, unfortunately :(

Due to the longer box, the crossmember won't fit, as AU don't have dual position like E series. The tailshaft will be too short. The console boot will be wrong. The ECU will be wrong. The bellhousing won't have the structural sump bolts in it. The flywheel and clutch will fit, although being lower spec than AU. You can change the mainshaft only if your box has a tapered roller bearing support in the input shaft. I believe pedal box is the same, although I can't be sure as I normally use a bolt in pedal pin. An AU box should not be hard to come by, they are going to be dearer than an E series, that's all.

Derrr, I didn't even think of the mainshaft!

I think I'm just going to have to do some more digging and saving.

I knew things like the ECU were going to be completely different. I had a good look at the pedal box today and it looks like a piece of piss to change! I could easily be done without removing the dash.
