My EA Ghis is leaking oil out the rear main seal (best I can establish), an engine pull to fix will cost $500, now if I get the gearbox pulled and re-built (it leaks a bit of fluid anyway) what would it cost me, I am guessing about $800.
I don't want manual, so don't suggest it, I like the idea of 4 speed auto, but I doubt a simple swap from a 3 to a 4 is going to be cheap for a start, and then I have to find the computer for it, and I don't want to spend alot if ti can be helped, the rest of my cars specs in my sig.

It's a little steep I must admit. Takes me about 3 hours out 3 hours in, plus time to fix the seal maybe an hour. Total 7 hours, at $50 each (depending on mechanic), is $350. Plus seal cost $10 or so.
Or the other, quicker, way to do it is drop the box. Probably about 5 or 6 hours work that way, but a little more complicated which is probably why he doesn't want to do it.
NFI what rebuilding the 3-speed's worth, does it need it or are you just being safe? Realistically they're boat anchors, so you should be able to get a good s/h one for a few hundred tops. If you do the box anyway, make him pull the box rather than the motor as it'll be cheaper for you.
Was that a best quote, or just the first place you asked? Pulling the box is something you can do at home without even a trolley jack, although it does help to have one , so bear that in mind when you negotiate with him....

Well I can do it myself, only problem is that we are renting and they put no mechanical work on-site in the lease, and besides that my wife wont let me do it, even though I know what I am doing, have pulled motors before.
Yes was the first place I asked, and it included fixing the main as well, I know an engine rebuild will cost about $2000 or more, so I figured gearbox is cheaper of the options, and could get rear main fixed same time, gearbox is fine, but why pull it and put it back when for a few dollars more it can be made new.

Damn ! A no mech work clause sounds kinda weird (incredibly sucky as well)
If you could live without the car for a week or so, and have a good mate's driveway you can borrow . . .
Of course it depends on your wifes objection being to you working onthe car, or you working on the car at the house. If you feel inclined, perhaps you could sell it to her - you can save some $$$ and then spend them on a weekend away or something . . . (sorry, but I have a save money / diy fixation at the moment)
