Okay my EA 4spd auto starts to upshift hard when the car has been driven for about 1/2 an hour. The gear changes are silky clean for about the first 20minutes or so and gradually get rougher. I have noticed if i drive like grandma it does shift alright. Could i need new tranny oil or could it be my S5 solenoid, the car has just hit 200000km on the original gearbox.
I have checked the fluid level and it is ok, anyone had similar problems?

I'd get the solenoid checked, as its that which controlls the shifting pressure.

How long since the fluid was changed?. If it is black and stinks it is best to change the lot out, sooner rather than later.

The fluid hasn't been changed for about 2years? I have done about 40000km. I might get a gasket and some tranny oil, how much oil would i need?

It will take about 4L. Make sure you use the correct oil such as Castrol TQ95

you need to bleed it fully as the gearbox sump only hols half a liter of oil :) most of it is in the torque converter and there is a trick getting that out :)
