I have a 94 ED Gli, automatic. Second gear is no longer part of this world and was wondering what my options are.

Considered replacing with an EF XR6 automatic box?? With a view to upgrading the motor at a later stage.

Will that combo go?? All suggestions much appreciated.

I am new to this stuff so be gentle!! :)

It sounds like the gearbox needs an over haul and there is no way around this. I know here in sydney the prices vary from about $1200.00 to about $2200.00 it depend who you go to
Shop around.The internal from a Ef to an Ed are the same the only difference is the pump and you cant mount ef box to ed you are not getting a stronger box so dont even bother Just make sue who ever you take it too make sure they clean out the cooler lines this is very important and living in the Northern Territory i would run an oil cooler but there is an optional coast

I had the trans serviced jan 01 and the guys replaced the oil cooler cause they found metal deposits in oil pan. Unfortunately that still didn’t save me.

The initial guys I took it too here in Darwin told me my throttle position switch was busted. Lucky I got my regular mechanic to check it out and he gave me the full story.

I've seen full replacement kits in magazines. Are these OK?? What should I look for in particular??

the first problem you had they have replaced your oil cooler but what about the oil cooler in the radiator you must replace that also before you replace the tranny
just go to someone with a good reputation and some one who has been around for a while
If you were in sydney i could help you
Also make sure that completely flush the cooler lines but if the guy is good enough he will do this automatically
In sydney 4 speeds go from $1200 to $2200

I think when only 1st and 3rd are active, your gearbox is in Limp Home Mode. HAppened to me. Im going onto my 3rd auto tranny. Bloody things.

hey many kilometers has your car got on it
it must have a few or doo you tow with it my ed has only 83000 on it (just been run in) an auto should last at least 140 000
more if it was looked after

320,000 k's
tranny died at 150,000 i think it was. Now, its dieing again.

About 120,000k's. I could be blamed for giving it some!! Oh well, you get that. :)

I should explain my earler post and say that they did do the oil cooler attached to the radiator.

If the trans is in Limp Home mode then the problem might just be electrical and not the transmission itself at all?

My gearbox is functioning in this "limp home" mode, 1st and 3rd only it seems!!
