Explorer 5 Speed Transmission - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

I'm looking at a 1994 Ford Explorer Sport 4WD with 128K on it. It's appears to have been well taken care of. I've heard that the 5 speed manual trans in these were troublesome. Is this true and and what goes wrong with them? Thanks in advance for any information.

I had a 91 Explorer 5-speed at one time, and I never had a problem with the 5-speed, nor have heard of a common problem with them. I think someone would be more concerned about the automatic transmission.. My advice, go and test drive it, run it through the gears, see how the feel and engage.. if all is good then it should be fine especially with some fresh synthetic tranny fluid, that should prolong the life of it even longer..

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, my explorer had about the same miles that the one you are looking at does, so I don't think you should have to worry much as long as it was maintained..
