Hi,

I have a 1997 4litre Falcon with the 4speed trans. Its done approx 207000KMS and it sometimes won't crank over when the trans is in park. If you shift it straight to N its OK and cranks and fires. I have removed the console around the shift lever assuming there would be an interlock switch to prevent starting in gear but there is no switch ? Am a bit worried that one day it won't start at all. Can anyone tell me where to look next ?

Ignition switch should be mounted on the steering column (above the brake pedal) and is operated by the key cylinder. Lower steering column to ease installation.

Hi , This hasn't happened again for a few days now...always the way.

TheFonz - are you saying it could be an ignition switch problem ? and not anything to do with whether the trans is in P or N ?

That's correct, at least on the one's I've done, There is a rod that goes from the back of the key cylinder, down the column to the ignition switch.

Its sorted ! Finally got to the point it wouldn't start at all - luckily at home in the garage. I found the ignition interlock - a white plastic unit on the side of the trans ( passenger side). Pulled it off and dismantled it it was full of dirt and was badly rusted. Got another from a wrecker and its all go !

Hi, I know you've got it sorted but I had the same problem with it not starting in park occasionally, it turned out that the gear leaver wasn't pushed all the way forward in park, all it I had to do was make sure it was pushed all the way forward and it started perfectly, pulled it pack while it was in park without pushing in the button and it wouldn't start.
