My Falcon TE50 has travelled 3500 km and has a terrible knocking noise through the gearbox (only at idle). Ford mechanics keep telling me that it is normal for the Tremec Box. It sounds like idler bushes are rattling and banging. Has anyone heard of similar problems. I wish I had ordered an auto.
Have the same problem with my pursuit 250. Had it fully checked out and from all reports it's normal. Only does it at idle and disappears once you depress the clutch. Been told it's a combination of clutch rattle and rollover noise from the gearbox.
Apparently they all do it to a varied degree.
My top loader made the same noise before and after it was rebuilt.
It would also be quiet if the clutch was pressed.
The Tremec is very similar to the top loader.
My wife has a TS50, Blueprint, Manual, Brembos; OK I bought her the car - Wedding Anniversary!
Same Deal, Have only heard the noise once, at about 1500km's thought the'd left an Irish Mechanic in the housing with a drift hammer.
Circumstances - Car in neutral, clutch out; can't say I leave the car in neutral with the clutch out too frequently.
Now done 6,000km's, no dramas.
When I did the factory tour, they had a few boxes on show, pre and post the modifications. The modded box input spline was shimmed up so there was minimal backlash compared to th e original; don't know if this is related.
Otherwise, box is brilliant - wouldn't look at an auto for quids!
I wen't through Tickford Mid May 2002, just before they closed the factory for the BA Development. Our car was a late May Build
I don't know whether they changed anything midway through the run, heard that they did some clutch changeovers from the early run due to a problem.
I went through on a Friday arvo, when the factory was closed. The person who showed me through (Tony) was great, he knew the product and let me photograph anything I wanted; the workshop was immaculate.
There is an extension housing that sits between the box and the bellhousing, which means they need a longer input shaft. He showed me the difference between the standard and the fine spline on the TS/TE. The original had heaps of backlash, the modified was tight as a drum. He said the they shimmed the box up, I figured they basically built to a tighter tolerance than factory.
I have included a photo that shows the spline difference, can send high res photos direct, but will have to be via email.
