Nissan plans to supply Ford with continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), Reuters reported, citing Japan's Nihon Keizai newspaper.
CVTs, which use pullies to provide a seamless progression of gear ratios, can cut fuel consumption by around 10 percent compared with vehicles with automatic transmissions.
Starting as early as 2005, the paper said, Jatco is expected to make "several tens of thousands" of CVTs a year.
Ford plans to use the transmissions in the passenger cars it produces in North America, such as sport utility vehicles and high-end sedans, the paper said.
