I have freeplay in my axle splines??? the axle has a small but not tiny amount of freeplay when you put it into the diff, is this normal?? I would have thought that there should be no noticeable play at all.

Is it OK or do I have a problem?

I have got:
Romac full spool
Moser billet axles 31 spline
All brand new parts.

No this is pretty normal. You will find a resonable degree of lash between axles and the pinnion. The diff oil is very viscous and the clearances are larger to suit.

The center isn't in a housing its on the bench and the play is most surely in the splines, there is the normal lash in the ring/pinnion but when holding the spool by hand you can twist the axle and it has play in it.

There usually is play in the fitting of the two components. Considering axles and spool are brand new all should be okay. I would describe as small but definately noticeable the play that would be present.
