Need a bit of help regarding a friends car. He has just got himself an AX Telstar TX5 Ghia. It is a 2.5l V6 Manual.

He took the car to get a service and a good check over, as you do, and as we were expecting, they said it needed the timing belt done. No surprise, as the car has 185k on it. The surprise was the 2000 buck quote. Yes, i know there can be a lot of labour involved, especially with a quad cam engine, but that seemed a lot.

The info i need is regarding one of the larger costs in the quote. It was a pair of 'friction gears' for 180 bucks each. Apparently they need to be replaced with the belt.

Could anyone tell me what these things are?

I too would be interested what they are as the wife has a v6 astina which had a noisy timing belt at 85000k. They replaced these friction gears but it made little difference to the noise and cost $700.00 approx.

i thought they only tensioner pulleys???
