Gear ratio question

I noticed over on the main site under specifications, the final drive ratio for the MTX3 is listed as 3.33. Is this accurate? If so that's going to throw the speedo on my Topaz off once the MTX4 is installed since it has a final drive of 3.73. If this is true I'll probably have to swap in an instument cluster from a sport model Tempo to keep things accurate. Or can my speedo be recalibrated somehow for the new gear ratio?

New cable

If I understand the way the speedo and gearing works, you should just be able to replace the speedometer cable off of your cluster with that from a car that was equipped with the 3.73 gears... which would be an HO equipped 5-speed from 88-91 and the V6 GLS from 92.

It's interesting, but the statistics in the Ford Documents show that the V6 GLS from 92 had the 3.73 gears and the V6 XR5/LTS from 92 had the 3.33 gears!! What gives?

I though that all the Tempo/Topaz with the 5 speed had a 3.52 final drive ratio... ?

final ratios.

Check the website, under Miscellaneous and the Ford Docs. If you read up on the 92 Tempo, 92 Topaz, and 93 Tempo you'll find the final drive ratios. I don't think any of them had the 3.52

Gear Ratios

Tim gave me those ratios and I verified them here, they match, and they've been verified with different sources.

Regular MTX3- 3.33
Sport MTX3- 3.73
regular mtx4- 3.52
sport mtx4- 3.73

more ratio details in that section......

hey guys....those ratios are out of the service manuals that I got from the ford dealership that I used to work at...so this info came right from ford documents also...It is weird the way these ford docs. work.....I noticed that some of the books even still mention diesel tranny's for the 85-87 models in my 88 and 89 books.....me and guillermo came to the conclusion that they kept old info in there for reference purposes....and as for the ratios I got them out of the books too....now I did notice that for 92 there was no MTX 4 listed in the list of ratios but there was two new tranny codes that weren't listed in 91 book.....I asked G about this and he told me that the ratio for V6's manual is 3.52 and that was one of the new ratios that I found in the book....so I figured the two new codes were the MTX 4 and just listed under the MTX 3 ones...why I don't know...although I have noticed that ford does have problems with spelling and wording in these books...but that is what the tranny gears were listed as in 92+. Sorry if this caused any confusion guys...I have been trying to find other sources of info to back up this info problem from the books..... : )
