i was just lookn at the ea falcon specs, and it says the gear ratios are
1 3.50, 2 2.14, 3 1.39, 4 1.00, 5 0.78
im prety new to all this stuff, just wonderin what gear ratio means and what do these numbers apply to. thanx

How many times the tailshalf turns to one full turn of the motor .. Or something along the lines of that..

Yep, that's it. 1st - the tail shaft turns once for every three and a half turns of the engine (and with a bit less than 3.5 times the tourque).

The torques the wrong way around 97EL.

The gearbox is a torque multiplier!

In first gear the engine will be rotating 3.5 times as fast as the tailshaft but the tailshaft will have 3.5 times the torque transmitted to it.

Taking the above ratios;

1st gear ratio 3.50:1
2nd gear ratio 2.14:1
3rd gear ratio 1.39:1
4th gear ratio 1.00:1 (ie. direct drive)
5th gear ratio 0.78:1 (ie. overdrive, the tailshaft is spinning faster than the motor, but with less torque)

Then you need to consider the diff ratio then the rolling radius of your tyres......
